iPhone (3G, 3GS)

On my iPhone 3G and now on my 3GS, running version 3.1.2 (7D11), I do not have the ability to add a second alert for a calendar event. There is no relevant configuration option that I can find, and searching online I've seen others who experience the same problem....but no answers.

Can someone point me in the right direction, aside from a visit to the Apple Store?
